The uses and ethnobotanical aspects of plants in Tanzania have not been documented adequately, and in terms of conservation, it is important to determine which species are used and whether overutilization may be occurring. On a global level, 80% of the world's population is believed to rely to some extent on medicinal plants, but little is known about the abundance and distribution of these plants or the effect of timber harvesting on medicinal plant populations (Caniago and Siebert 1998).
